Step Into Walnut Creek’s History

On the 2nd Saturday of the month, the Walnut Creek Historical Society offers free, 60–90-minute docent-led history tours of downtown Walnut Creek, stopping at historical points of interest and establishments with storied pasts. The final three tours of 2024 are August 10, September 14, and October 12. You’ll be amazed at how much history you stroll past on every visit to downtown Walnut Creek.

These easy walking tours on city sidewalks bring to life the early days and growth of what has become a San Francisco Bay Area destination. The tour is a great way to experience our city—a chance to spend a morning with friends and family learning the history of Walnut Creek, then staying in town to enjoy all that downtown Walnut Creek has to offer today.

Tickets are free, and include an informational tour booklet with photos of historic buildings. Donations are appreciated.

Walnut Creek was first called “The Corners” because the region’s two main throughways—Pacheco Road (N/S) and Lafayette Road (E/W) met at what is today the corner of Main Street and Mt. Diablo Blvd. At this junction stood the Oak Saloon, a popular watering hole. The town’s name was changed to Walnut Creek in 1862, and today, this corner is home to Tiffany’s.
