Improved Crosswalks With Flashing Beacons Coming to Shadelands Drive and Mitchell Drive
The City of Walnut Creek continues to make roadway and walkway improvements designed to make getting around Shadelands’ busy streets safer and easier for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers. All roadway improvements are paid for by a long-held reserve of funds dedicated solely to Shadelands infrastructure enhancements.
With the completion of the N. Wiget Lane repaving and bicycle lane installation project, up next is a project to improve, refresh, and enhance two existing crosswalks: one on Shadelands Drive in front of Viamonte Walnut Creek, and one on Mitchell Drive in front of Shadelands Post Acute and Contra Costa School of Performing Arts.
Crews will remove existing crossing signage on Shadelands Drive in front of Viamonte and replace with two pedestrian push button actuated flashing yellow beacons — one for each side of the crossing. Flashing beacons, activated by pedestrians, are safety features that alert drivers to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.
The crosswalk on Mitchell Drive in front of Shadelands Post Acute will also be improved, refreshed, and enhanced with two pedestrian push button actuated flashing yellow beacons — one for each side of the crossing. Additional striping and delineators on Mitchell Drive are intended to improve pedestrian safety by shortening the crossing distance and improving pedestrian visibility for motorists.
Construction is planned for early 2025, weather permitting. Watch for project updates in future issues of The Shadelands Scene.
