The Nutcracker, December 15, Contra Costa School of Performing Arts
Get ready to be enchanted by the magic of the season! For one performance only, the Dance Department of Contra Costa School of Performing Arts (CoCoSPA), under the direction of Dance Director Anna Gemma, is staging the school’s second annual performance of The Nutcracker, the beloved ballet that features Tchaikovsky’s musical composition, The Nutcracker Suite, first performed in St. Petersburg in 1892. This year’s full-length production will be performed Sunday, December 15, Noon, at Diablo Valley College (DVC) Theater, 321 Golf Club Road, Pleasant Hill.
CoCoSPA’s Nutcracker will feature a cast of more than 50 of the school’s middle and high school students, who will showcase their talents and love of dance through the art of ballet. The DVC theater provides an intimate setting for audiences to experience Tchaikovsky's timeless music and the engaging story of Clara and her journey through the Land of Sweets.

Dance Director Anna Gemma is a professional dancer and choreographer, born and raised in Russia, and highly trained in classical and character dance. She has studied at a number of esteemed ballet schools and has traveled extensively, performing on world stages, and she brings that experience and joy of dance to CoCoSPA. Her distinctive vision and staging infuse this performance with a classic, old world feel with a modern twist.
“Ours is a classical staging of The Nutcracker, mixing all ages and grades, from 6th to 12th graders, in traditional Nutcracker costumes, allowing all dance students to be a part of the experience,” said Anna. “The students are excited to perform this familiar and enduring ballet — to show what they and our school are capable of doing."
